René Spies (born July 5, 1973 in Winterberg ) is a former German bobsleigh pilot and today's trainer.

Career

Spies graduated from the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium (Winterberg) . The greatest successes of Spies, which has been active since 1991, were the Junior World Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1999 (both in the two-man bobsleigh ), the victory in the overall World Cup for two-man bobsleigh in 2001 and the European championship in the two-man bobsleigh in 2003 together with Marco Jakobs . In 2001 and 2005 he was German two-man bobsleigh champion and sixth in two-man bobsleigh at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . In 2006 he won the four-man bobsleigh championship, before taking fifth place in the same discipline at the Olympic Games in Turin six weeks later . René Spies started for the BSC Winterberg . Shortly before the start of the 2007/08 season, he ended his active career after another thigh injury that had hampered him for some time.

Then Spies was assistant to national coach Christoph Langen . In April 2016 he succeeded Langen. He received a two-year contract from the association, which is valid until after the 2018 Winter Olympics .
