Wolfgang Hoppe (born November 14, 1957 in Apolda ) is a former German bobsleigh driver , Olympic champion and current trainer . Since 1999 he has been the national coach of the German female bobsledders.

Athletic career

Wolfgang Hoppe's father Werner was a GDR master of motocross several times , his brother Heinz even made it the GDR's record champion on the off-road motorcycle with 37 titles.

Wolfgang Hoppe began his athletic career in athletics . At SC Turbine Erfurt he tried his hand at first as a decathlete . In 1976 he was runner-up at the GDR youth championships. In 1981, the trained mechanical engineer switched to the bobsleigh, initially as a pusher, because of the lack of prospects in athletics. His club became the ASK Vorwärts Oberhof (after the reunification as WSV Oberhof 05 ), his coach Raimund Bethge .

With his two gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal at the Olympics , the world championship titles in the four in 1984, 1990 and 1997 and in the two in 1985 and 1986, the European title in the four in 1987, the European title in the two in 1985, 1986 and 1987, the German champion in the four and in two in 1994 and as a five-time GDR champion, the Thuringian is one of the most successful bobsleigh drivers. Hoppe, who served as a major in the NVA , won a total of 36 medals in international championships, 17 of them gold. His long-term pushers were Dietmar Schauerhammer and Bogdan Musiol .

After his victories in both the two-man and four-man bobsleigh at the 1984 Olympic Games, he was able to achieve silver medal in both disciplines four years later in Calgary. At the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , Wolfgang Hoppe was the flag bearer of the first all-German Olympic team after reunification at the opening ceremony . For his sporting successes he received the silver bay leaf in 1993 .

In 1993 Hoppe, who was taken over in a sports promotion company of the Bundeswehr after reunification in 1990 , was dismissed because it became known that he had concealed contact with the Stasi when he was hired .

Coaching

In 1998, Hoppe started a career as a coach. Since 1999, the qualified sports teacher has looked after the German bobsleigh riders as national coach. He achieved the greatest success in this position when his athlete Sandra Kiriasis won the gold medal at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin . He is currently in charge of the National Bobsleigh Association.

Wolfgang Hoppe is a volunteer ambassador for the Children's Hospice Foundation for Central Germany in Nordhausen in Tambach-Dietharz. In the elections to the city council of his hometown Apolda, Hoppe was elected to the city council in June 2009.
