Geoffrey Mason
Geoffrey Mason ( Geoffrey Travers Mason ; born May 13, 1902 in Philadelphia , † January 5, 1987 in Rumford , Rhode Island ) was an American bobsledder .
Mason studied literature at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine . He played football and was also a member of the track and field team. In hammer throwing , he was second best in his school, behind Fred Tootell , who later became the Olympic champion in this discipline. Mason continued his studies at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg im Breisgau .
Mason read an ad in the Paris Herald newspaper looking for American athletes living in Europe. These should complement the bobsleigh team at the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz. He was accepted into the team and won the gold medal in the five-man bobsleigh after just one month of training.
Mason then returned to his homeland and taught Latin and German, initially at Bowdoin College, but later mainly at primary and secondary schools. He was also a coach in seven different sports.
