Pierre Musy (born August 25, 1910 in Albeuve ; † November 21, 1990 in Düdingen ) was a Swiss bobsleigh pilot , equestrian , diplomat and high-ranking officer . He was Olympic champion in the four-man bobsleigh in 1936 and was head of the Swiss intelligence service from 1963 to 1967 .

Life

Pierre Musy, the eldest of seven children of the later Federal Councilor Jean-Marie Musy and Juliette de Meyer, received his education at the Collège Saint-Michel in Friborg . He then studied law at the University of Bern . From 1931 to 1935 he worked for a bank in Geneva , then until 1939 for the federal bank and domain administration. He was promoted several times in the Swiss Army : in 1939 to captain , in 1946 to major , in 1955 to colonel and finally in 1965 to brigadier . Musy was three times in command of a military unit; from 1938 to 1941 of Dragoon Squadron 5, from 1946 to 1949 of Fusilier Battalion 20 and from 1959 to 1960 of Motorized Dragoon Regiment 1. His diplomatic career began in 1951 as a military attaché in Tehran , then from 1954 to 1961 he was a military attaché in Paris . In the Federal Military Department , he headed the intelligence and defense sub-group from 1963 to 1967, i.e. head of the Swiss intelligence service .

As an athlete, Musy was very versatile. In the 1930s he was one of the best show jumpers in the country. In 1934 and 1935 he won the Nations Prize in Hanover . In winter he drove bobsleigh. At the 1935 World Bobsleigh Championship in Igls, he finished second in the four-man bobsleigh, together with Arnold Gartmann , Charles Bouvier and Joseph Beerli . With the same people behind him, he was able to celebrate the greatest success in the following year, winning the gold medal at the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . Musy also took part in the 1948 Summer Olympics in London , this time as an eventing rider : In the individual ranking he finished 32nd, with the team he came fourth. From 1969 to 1973, after his retirement, Pierre Musy was head of the Swiss show jumping team.
