Gray took part in the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz for the US team and won the gold medal with the five-man bobsleigh team. He was actually only staying in the city as a visitor when he was selected for the bobsled in his home country. At the games four years later in Lake Placid , he won the gold medal again with the four-man bobsleigh team. At the 1937 World Championships , he won the bronze medal in the four-man bobsleigh in Cortina d'Ampezzo under his nickname "Tippy" Gray. At the Olympic Winter Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1936 , Gray was a substitute, but was not used. The Cornell University graduate has been mistaken for British actor and composer Clifford Gray due to several false reports linking him to show business . Whether and if and to what extent Gray himself had contacts in show business can no longer be clarified today.
