Josef Sterff (born January 2, 1935 in Seeshaupt ; † September 7, 2015 ) was a German bobsledder .

Career

Josef Sterff comes from Ohlstadt in Upper Bavaria , a municipality in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district , and was a butcher by profession. Since Ohlstadt is one of the communities in which winter sports, especially bobsleigh, plays an important role, Josef Sterff was also interested in this sport. He became a member of SV Ohlstadt and chose the four-man bobsleigh as his preferred discipline within bobsleigh. He became a member of Franz Schelle's team , with whom he soon took part in national and international competitions. The first great success was second place in the four-man bobsleigh at the German Championships in 1958 with Schelle, Eduard Kaltenberger , Sterff and Otto Göbl . The nomination for the bobsleigh world championships in 1958 justified the four with winning the runner-up world championship behind the bobsleigh Germany I with Hans Rösch . Third place followed and won a bronze medal at the 1959 Bobsleigh World Championships in St. Moritz with Schelle, Sterff, Hartl Geiger and Göbl. In 1962, Schelle's bobsleigh team was particularly successful; First they became German champions and then they succeeded in the line-up of Schelle, Sterff, Ludwig Siebert and Göbl at the four-man bobsleigh championships held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and thus won the gold medal. They defended the German championship title in 1963. Another highlight of his career were the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck in 1964 , with his pilot Franz Schelle and the pushers Otto Göbl and Ludwig Siebert he finished fifth in the Germany I bobsleigh, with the fastest time in the second run.

For winning the gold medal in the four-man bobsleigh, Sterff and the team were awarded the silver laurel leaf by Federal President Heinrich Lübke on January 30, 1962 .
