Hanns Kilian (born May 2, 1905 in Garmisch ; † April 17, 1981 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) was a German bobsleigh driver . He won two Olympic medals and was world champion three times.
Career
Kilian first took part in the Olympic Games in St. Moritz in 1928. In the five-man bobsleigh with Valentin Krempl , Hans Heß , Sebastian Huber and Hans Nägle , Kilian won the bronze medal behind the bobsleighs from the United States controlled by William Fiske and Jennison Heaton . In 1930 Kilian won his first German championship title together with Sebastian Huber in the two-man bobsleigh . In 1931 a bobsleigh world championship in the two-man bobsleigh was held in Oberhof for the first time and Kilian won the title together with Sebastian Huber. At the Olympic Games in Lake Placid in 1932, the two-man and four-man bobsleigh competitions that are still common today were held for the first time . Kilian and Huber finished fifth in the two-man bobsleigh. With the four-man bobsleigh in the line-up of Kilian, Max Ludwig , Hans Mehlhorn and Huber, Kilian again won bronze behind two US bobsleighs.
In 1934 the bobsleigh world championship in four-man bobsleigh took place on Kilian's house track in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Kilian won the title together with Fritz Schwarz , Hermann von Valta and Sebastian Huber. The following year at the 1935 World Bobsleigh Championship in St. Moritz Kilian was able to defend his title, with Alexander Gruber sitting in the bobsleigh for Sebastian Huber. At the Olympic Games in his hometown of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1936 , Kilian was the best-placed German in both competitions, but as fifth in the two-man bobsleigh and seventh in the four-man bobsleigh, he clearly missed the medal ranks.
The 1938 world championship in the four-man bobsleigh was held again in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, together with Werner Windhaus , Bobby Braumüller and Franz Kemser , Kilian took second place behind the British bobsleigh, driven by Frederick McEvoy . In 1939 Kilian won bronze together with Schletter at the world championship in the two-man bobsleigh , in the four-man bobsleigh Kilian also won bronze together with Windhaus, Hans Schmidt and Kemser. Kilian, Kemser, Windhaus and Schmidt also won the first German four-man bobsleigh championship after the Second World War ten years later.
Hanns Kilian was a hotelier in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and started for SC Riessersee . From 1956 to 1968 he was President of the German Bobsleigh and Toboggan Association .
