Hans Hiltebrand

Hans Hiltebrand (born January 18, 1945 in Dielsdorf ZH ) is a former Swiss bobsleigh driver .

Career

The qualified electrician from the Zurich bobsleigh club began bobsleigh in 1970. In 1972 he won the European championship title in the four-man bobsleigh with Herbert Ott and Rudolf Born pushing bobsleigh pilot Hansruedi Müller . In 1972 Müller and Hiltebrand were Swiss runners-up in the two-man bobsleigh , and in 1973 Hiltebrand took third place in the Swiss championships in Müller's bobsleigh.

From 1975 Hiltebrand was a bobsleigh pilot himself and in 1975 took second place in the two-man bobsleigh at the Swiss championships. He had his international breakthrough as a bobsleigh pilot in 1977 when he won the world championship in the two-man bobsleigh with Heinz Meier . After 1972 and 1977 Hiltebrand also won his third international title on the natural ice rink in St. Moritz when he won the 1980 European bobsleigh championship with Walter Rahm in the two-man bobsleigh. The Swiss won all three medals in the four-man bobsleigh, while Hiltebrand, Ulrich Schindler , Walter Rahm and Armin Baumgartner received bronze medals behind Erich Schärer and Peter Schärer . At the 1980 Olympic Games in Lake Placid, Hiltebrand finished fourth in the two-man bobsleigh and sixth in the four-man bobsleigh.

At the European Bobsleigh Championships in 1981 in Igls, Hiltebrand and Walter Rahm won the title in the two-man bobsleigh, and in the four-man bobsleigh he finished ninth. At the world championship a month later in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Hiltebrand and Rahm took fourth place. In the four-man bobsleigh, Hiltebrand and Kurt Poletti , Franz Weinberger and Franz Isenegger won the silver medal behind GDR pilot Bernhard Germeshausen . In 1982 Hiltebrand only competed in the two-man bobsleigh with Ulrich Bächli ; after bronze at the European Championships in Cortina d'Ampezzo , the two won the silver medal at the World Championships in St. Moritz . The winner was the two-man bobsleigh by Erich Schärer. At the 1983 European Championship , Hiltebrand finished sixth in the two-man bobsleigh. In 1984 he reached fifth place with Meinrad Müller at the 1984 Olympic Games in Sarajevo.

The 1985 European Bobsleigh Championship took place in St. Moritz again. Hiltebrand and Müller won bronze in both competitions, supported by Urs Leuthold and Kurt Ott in the four-man bobsleigh . At the 1985 World Bobsleigh Championships in Cervinia, Hiltebrand and Müller finished fifth in the two-man bobsleigh. In 1986 Hiltebrand won the European Championships in Igls with Kurt Meier , Erwin Fassbind and André Kiser in the four-man bobsleigh. Hiltebrand dropped out for the 1986 World Cup , Erich Schärer won with Meier, Fassbind and Kiser. The following year Hiltebrand only competed in the 1987 World Cup in St. Moritz . In the two-man bobsleigh, he and André Kiser took second place behind his compatriot Ralph Pichler . Hiltebrand, Urs Fehlmann , Erwin Fassbind and Kiser won the four-bobsleigh . At the end of his active career, Hiltebrand started at the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. With André Kiser, he finished sixth in the two-man bobsleigh, while Hiltebrand, Fehlmann, Fassbind and Kiser took ninth place in the four-man bobsleigh.

At Swiss championships from 1978 to 1988 Hiltebrand took first place seven times (1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988) and four times second in the two-man bobsleigh; He won the four-man bobsleigh in 1982 and 1985.

After winning everything but an Olympic medal in his active career, he succeeded as a coach: in 1998, his protégé Pierre Lueders won Olympic gold in the two-man bobsleigh. Hiltebrand was the coach of the Canadian bobsleigh riders until 1999, and in 2002 he was in charge of the Swiss team.
