Justin Kripps (born January 6, 1987 in Naʻalehu , Hawaii ) is a Canadian bobsleigh driver .

Career

Kripps started out as a sprinter in athletics at Simon Fraser University as well as a motor sportsman. At the age of 18 he came to bobsleigh and competed in a test competition in 2006, after which he was accepted as a pusher in the Lyndon Rush team in the 2006/07 season and initially started in the European Bobsleigh Cup. The team of four drove into the top 10 straight away. He finished the only bobsleigh World Cup in a Rush four-man in 22nd place in Igls .

At the 2007 Bobsleigh World Championship in St. Moritz , the Summerlander did not compete in the rush four-man bobsleigh after the first day. After the World Cup he switched to Serge Despres' bobsleigh for the rest of the season . From the following season , Krippse will be part of Pierre Lueders' team . In his first World Cup appearance in his four-man bobsleigh, Kripps was third in the four-man bobsleigh and was among the top ten for the first time.

At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , he reached fifth place with Pierre Lueders' four-man bobsleigh and narrowly missed a medal. Shortly after the games, Kripps decided to retrain from pushing to pilot. He completed his pilot training in summer 2010 and started the 2010/11 season with his own four-man bobsleigh in the North American Cup. At the 2011 Junior World Championships, he finished fifth with his four-man bobsleigh and eighth with the two-man bobsleigh.

For the 2011/12 season he moved to the European Cup before finally taking part in the World Cup with his bobsleigh in Whistler in February 2012 . At the 2012 Bobsleigh World Championships , he won the bronze medal in the team competition as a member of Timothy Randall's two-man bobsleigh .

At the 2013 Bobsleigh World Championships in St. Moritz, he finished sixth in the team competition and 12th in the two-man bobsleigh with Neville Wright .

Shortly before the start of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , Kripps caused a stir because his website was blocked by Russian authorities in Russia. Kripps had previously posted a photo of his team in underwear to protest the suppression of lesbians and gays in Russia. At the Olympic Games, he finished sixth in the two-man bobsleigh. In the four-man bobsleigh he was eliminated in 30th place after race three.

In the 2017/18 season , Kripps won the overall World Cup in two and in combination, whereby he was the only race to win the Altenberg race on January 6, 2018, but took five second places.

At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , Kripps and his pusher Alexander Kopacz were able to secure an Olympic gold medal in the two-man bobsleigh. The simultaneous Germans Friedrich / Margis also won gold.

In the 2018/19 season , Kripps made it onto the podium four times in five starts in the two-man bobsleigh and finished eighth overall. He won the race in Lake Placid in the four-man bobsleigh . At the World Championships in Whistler , he won the silver medal in the two-man bobsleigh and the bronze medal in the four-man bobsleigh with Cameron Stones.
