Kati Wilhelm (born August 2, 1976 in Schmalkalden ) is a German former biathlete . She was one of the most successful German participants in this sport with titles at both world championships and the Olympic Games .
Career
Beginnings as a cross-country skier
Kati Wilhelm gained her first experience on the trail in 1983 in the training center in Steinbach-Hallenberg . At the age of fourteen she switched to the sports high school in Oberhof and graduated from high school in 1995. Immediately afterwards Kati Wilhelm went to the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr in Oberhof (currently she has the rank of sergeant major ). In 1998 she reached a fifth place with the cross-country skiing relay at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan .
Successful biathlete
In 1999, cross-country skier Kati Wilhelm switched to biathlon and started in the 2000/01 season for the first time in the biathlon world cup for SC Motor Zella-Mehlis . In her third World Cup race, Wilhelm took her first podium, and in the Antholz sprint she took third place. After further regular placements in the World Cup points, the 2001 Biathlon World Championships in Pokljuka became the first major success in Wilhelm's career. In her very first World Championship race, the sprint race, she won the gold medal. She achieved further top 10 placements with seventh place in the pursuit and fifth place in the mass start. Although Wilhelm showed a weaker performance in the relay race and shot two penalties in the prone position, it was enough for her to win the silver medal with the German relay. In the sprint race held after the World Championships in Lake Placid , Wilhelm won the second race of her career. Despite a poor performance in Oslo, where she was lapped after 40th place in the sprint in the pursuit, Wilhelm finished eighth in the overall World Cup at the end of her first biathlon season.
At the beginning of the 2001/02 season, Wilhelm was finally able to establish himself in the World Cup. In the twelve races held before the Olympics, she finished only once outside of the World Cup points, the best result was second place in the Osrblie sprint. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , Wilhelm became one of the most successful athletes. In the sprint race she won the gold medal and in the subsequent pursuit race the silver medal. Wilhelm was also successful with the German relay and won their second gold medal together with Katrin Apel , Uschi Disl and Andrea Henkel . At the end of winter, Wilhelm finished eighth in the overall World Cup, as in the previous season.
In the winter of the 2004/05 season, Wilhelm won three World Cup races and finished second in the overall World Cup. The following winter, Wilhelm became the second German to win the overall World Cup in the 2002/03 season after Martina Beck (née Glagow) , as well as the Sprint and Pursuit World Cups.
At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , she was the flag bearer for the German delegation at the opening ceremony on February 10, 2006. Kati Wilhelm won the gold medal in the 10 km pursuit, came second in the German 4 × 6 km relay and second in the first mass start at the Olympic Games over 12.5 km. This makes her the most successful biathlete at winter games. In 2006 she was voted Sportswoman of the Year for her successes .
At the 2007 World Championships in Antholz , she won the World Cup gold medal with the relay for the first time in her career. After Wilhelm was able to achieve several relay medals since her gold medal in the sprint at the 2001 World Championships, but not won an individual medal at several World Championships, the bronze medal in the mass start in Antholz meant her second individual World Championship medal after six years.
At the biathlon world championships in Pyeongchang, South Korea in 2009 , she won the sprint again after 2001 and thus also secured her first individual gold medal at world championships in 8 years. She crossed the finish line 9.9 seconds ahead of her teammate Simone Hauswald . In the pursuit race that followed she won the silver medal behind the Swede Helena Jonsson despite 6 misses . Her streak of success continued in the individual competition, in which she triumphed for the first time in her career thanks to the second best mileage and only one shooting error.
At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , she won the bronze medal in the biathlon relay together with Simone Hauswald, Martina Beck and Andrea Henkel. After the 2009/10 season, Wilhelm ended her biathlon career.
After the active career
From the 2010/11 World Cup season, Kati Wilhelm will be accompanying the broadcasts of biathlon competitions as an expert on the television program Das Erste .
Kati Wilhelm runs the Heimatlon restaurant in Steinbach-Hallenberg.
Private life
As the SPD's electoral woman, Wilhelm was a member of the Federal Assembly in 2004 . From March 2006 she studied International Management at the Ansbach University of Applied Sciences and has now completed her studies. Wilhelm is in a relationship with the biathlon chief technician of the German Ski Association Andreas Emslander and is a mother of two. Today she runs the Heimatlon restaurant in the town of Steinbach-Hallenberg in the Thuringian Forest .
