German Sports Journalist Award

The German Sports Journalist Award , until 2013 Herbert Award ( spelling : HERBERT Award ) is a German journalism award . It has been awarded to the best sports journalists, publications and programs in Hamburg every two years since 2005 . Until 2013 it was named after the reporter Herbert Zimmermann , known for his radio commentary on the final of the 1954 World Cup . The award ceremony takes place in the Grand Elysée Hotel and is organized by the event agency Sören Bauer Events with the support of various partners.

All athletes with national and state squad status, team athletes in the national leagues of basketball, ice hockey, handball, football (1st to 3rd league), hockey and volleyball, as well as individual boxing, tennis or golf athletes are entitled to vote. In addition, thanks to the support of the Deutsche Sporthilfe Foundation, there are around 1000 formerly sponsored athletes and 600 young athletes from sports boarding schools, a total of around 20,000 athletes. Each athlete has three votes, he can also vote for non-nominated candidates. The first vote is worth three points, the second vote two and the third vote one.

Until 2013, the three best points in each category received the "Golden", "Silver" and "Bronze Herbert". The prize was an aluminum plate with the silhouette of Zimmermann's face in gold, silver or bronze, in front of which a plexiglass ball is set into the plate at the level of the mouth as an implied microphone . He weighed about two and a half kilograms. In addition to the "Herberts" there were one or more special prices that varied.
