At the XIX. During the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , eight biathlon competitions were held. The venue was Soldier Hollow in Park City .

The pursuit discipline was on the agenda for men and women for the first time, while the mass start was still left out. That is why a separate mass start world championship was held in 2002 as part of a World Cup event. The outstanding athlete of these games was the Norwegian Ole Einar Bjørndalen , who won all four possible gold medals. That had never happened before at either World Championships or the Olympic Games. Among women, there was a clear dominance of German biathletes. They won the relay, Kati Wilhelm was Olympic champion in the sprint and won silver in the pursuit. Andrea Henkel introduced this series with a gold medal in the individual competition. Only the persecution went to the Russian Olga Pyljowa .
