A military patrol took place at the II. Winter Olympics in St. Moritz in 1928 . Since no international association existed, the International Olympic Committee downgraded him to the demonstration competition . The organization was taken over by the military delegation of the Swiss Ski Association . The military patrol run is considered the predecessor of today's biathlon and today's ski mountaineering competitions .

Because of the snowfall the night before, the competition started 45 minutes late. It was held over a distance of 28 km and 1124 meters of altitude. Each patrol had to consist of an officer (who was not allowed to shoot), a non-commissioned officer and two soldiers. All members of a patrol had to pass the target within 30 seconds.
