A military patrol run took place at the 1st Olympic Games in Chamonix in 1924 . This competition is now viewed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as a demonstration competition , although the IOC did not differentiate between demonstration and original competitions at the time. However, IOC statistics include the 1924 military patrol medal winners.
The military patrol was also part of the program as a demonstration competition at the Winter Olympics in 1928 , 1936 and 1948 , but never managed to be accepted as an official competition. Biathlon can be seen as an indirect successor .

After 15 km, three of the four athletes had to shoot at so-called field targets. The athletes had 18 shots each to hit the targets 250 m away. For each target hit, the team that had to reach the target as a whole received a time credit of 30 seconds, which was deducted from the actual running time. Of the six teams that started, only four finished the competition; Italy and Poland had to give up due to the adverse weather conditions.
