At the XX. During the 2006 Winter Olympics , ten biathlon competitions were held. The venue was the Centro Olimpico Biathlon in San Sicario on the territory of the municipality of Cesana Torinese , 97 kilometers west of Turin . The area was at an altitude of 1620 to 1680 meters, the audience capacity was 4628.

Mass start races (men 15 km, women 12.5 km) were new to the program. There was another change in the women's relay: Here the length of the route for each individual runner was shortened from 7.5 km to 6 km. Michael Greis dominated the men . He won three out of five possible gold medals. For women, however, the medals were distributed among different athletes and nations.

Even during the games there was a doping scandal when the Russian biathlete Olga Pyljowa was proven to have been taking the doping agent Carphedon , which resulted in her immediate disqualification and suspension. After the games there were two further doping cases with the Austrians Wolfgang Perner and Wolfgang Rottmann , which blood doping could be proven. Their placements were subsequently revoked.
