Dostál has been regularly represented in the Biathlon World Cup since 1994. After finishing 9th in the Bad Gastein sprint in the 1994/95 season, he had to wait five years for a similar result. Dostál's World Championship races were also not very successful, with six World Championship participations between 1995 and 2001 he never made it into the top 20 athletes. At the 2003 World Championships , he achieved 5th place in the mass start, the fifth top 10 placement of his career, his best placement ever up to that point. Completely surprisingly, Roman Dostál won gold in the individual race over 20 km at the 2005 World Championships in Hochfilzen , when he was able to assert himself with just one shooting error and the seventh best running time in front of the three German athletes Michael Greis , Ricco Groß and Sven Fischer .

In the following 2005/06 season, Dostál placed five in the top ten, including second place at the season-closing mass start in Oslo, the second podium of his career. At the end of the season he achieved his best result with 23rd place in the overall World Cup.

Roman Dostál took part in the Winter Olympics in 2002, 2006 and 2010. He achieved his best placement in the 2006 mass start as 23rd. He also finished in the top ten with the Czech relay.
