Wolfgang Rottmann (born May 15, 1973 in Altenmarkt im Pongau ) is a former Austrian biathlete .

Career

At the Biathlon World Championships in 2000 at Holmenkollen ( Norway ) he was world champion over 20 km. At his home world championship in 2005 in Hochfilzen he won the bronze medal in the team of the 4 × 7.5 km relay .

The Austrian Rottmann, who was never one of the best shooters, showed one of his weakest races at the relay race on January 25, 2003 in Antholz. After an error-free shooting performance in prone shooting, Rottmann didn't hit a single one of the five targets in standing shooting, neither with the regular five cartridges nor the three spare rounds available in the relay race. Rottmann had to run five penalty loops, which pushed the Austrian team, which had been doing well up to that point, back to eighth place.

After an unannounced doping raid in the house of the Austrian biathletes at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , Rottmann and his colleague Wolfgang Perner left in a rush. Both were then excluded from the Austrian Olympic team. However, doping could not be proven in the athletes. In March 2006 he announced his final retirement from competitive sports.

In April 2007, Rottmann and Perner and four Austrian cross-country skiers were banned from the Olympic Games for life by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In the opinion of the IOC, all were considered convicted of having jointly used doping substances. IOC justification for the severe penalty: "These cases go beyond the simple possession of prohibited substances and methods, and are clear examples in which a network, including athletes, came together to manipulate blood and engage in doping practices." Their results from Turin have been deleted.

In 2000 Rottmann was awarded the Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria .
