At the XXII. The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi held eleven biathlon competitions. The venue was the Laura biathlon and cross-country skiing center in Krasnaya Polyana , a facility on the Psechako mountain ridge (Chrebet Psechako) . The facility is about six kilometers from Krasnaya Polyana and includes a cross-country and biathlon stadium for 7,500 spectators each. In the preseason it was inaugurated with races of the biathlon world cup . The name "Laura" is derived from a wild mountain river in the Caucasus .
The races were not part of the Biathlon World Cup of the 2013/14 season, as was usually the case with the biathlon world championships in the non-Olympic years . There were only World Cup points for the mixed relay, as the victorious nation in this ranking would otherwise only have to be determined from a World Cup race in Östersund . However, points for the Nations Cup were not awarded in the mixed relay at the Olympic Games. The mixed relay was a new addition to the Olympic program for biathletes . This had already been held as part of world championships since 2007 , prior to that independent biathlon mixed relay world championships .
The entire Winter Olympics were overshadowed by a doping problem that had never occurred to this extent . First, during the games, the German biathlete Evi Sachsenbacher-Stehle was subsequently disqualified and suspended after she had been proven to have taken prohibited substances. She then ended her career. What came to light two years after the games were held went beyond any previously known framework. The Russian officials were shown to have been systematically doping up to the cover-up of doping results from their own athletes by swapping samples, which had far-reaching consequences for Russian sport. For example, Russian athletes have been completely excluded from competitions by many associations, with the exception of individual cases - but not in biathlon. World Cup events in Russia have been canceled here and the already awarded World Cup has been withdrawn from the country.

Quota places
On February 18, 2013, one day after the end of the Biathlon World Championships 2013 of Nove Mesto na Moravě , the odds were starting places for the National Olympic Committee awarded. They are based on the results of the national associations at the 2012 World Championships in Ruhpolding and 2013. The biathletes still had to qualify for the quota places through their performance. The qualification phase ran until January 19, 2014, and qualification results could be collected via the World Cup and the IBU Cup . If individual NOKs did not name qualified starters for all quota places by January 20, 2014, these places could be allocated to previously unqualified NOKs by the board of the Biathlon World Federation and the International Olympic Committee . Due to the limitation of the starting places for individual starters, the starting places of the relay teams were limited to 20 for both men and women.
