Fredrik Wilhelm Lindström (born July 24, 1989 in Bredbyn , Örnsköldsvik municipality ) is a former Swedish biathlete .
Career
Beginnings
Fredrik Lindström from Anundsjö SKF grew up in Bredbyn. He contested his first international races in Presque Isle in 2006 and in Martell in 2007 as part of the Junior World Championships. In 2006, when he was fourth in the relay, he was the best result, but in 2007 he was sixth in the relay, seventh in the sprint and 15th in the pursuit. Since the 2007/08 season, Lindström has taken part in races in the Junior European Cup and won his first sprint in Geilo . In the pursuit race that followed, he dropped to 28th place, but also reached the top position in the following sprint from Torsby . In the pursuit race that followed, he was able to confirm the top position as runner-up this time. The Junior World Championships in Ruhpolding once again brought the best result with sixth place in the relay, and the young Swede also ran 29th in the sprint, 22nd in the pursuit and 30th in the individual. In 2009, Lindström ran his fourth Junior World Championship in Canmore . Again he finished sixth, but now in the pursuit race, with the relay the Swede only finished eighth. In the sprint he was 14th and 17th in the individual.
First World Cup and first Olympic Games (2008 to 2010)
At the start of the 2008/09 season , Lindström made his debut in the men's IBU Cup . In the first sprint in Idre he was 28th, in the following pursuit race he improved to sixth place. In Hochfilzen he was allowed to represent the sick Magnus Jonsson in the World Cup for the first time . In the sprint, Lindström was 47, missing the World Cup points by seven places, but qualified for the pursuit race in which he was 55th. In the course of the season the Swede was able to run other races in Whistler , now replacing the sick Björn Ferry . In the individual, he again missed the points by a few placements in 48th place, but in the sprint he made 13th place with a faultless performance and was third-best Swede in the race after Jörgen Brink and directly behind Carl , only half a second apart Johan Bergman . In his first season in the World Cup in Vancouver, he won the race with the Swedish relay, it was only the second success of a Swedish men's relay ever. Fredrik Lindström took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics. His best result was 33rd place in the pursuit. With the relay he finished 4th.
Nationally, Lindström won the sprint and pursuit titles at the 2010 Swedish Biathlon Championships .
First World Cup victory and second Olympic Games (2010 to 2014)
In the post-Olympic season , Lindström was able to win again in a relay race. This time the mixed relay race in Pokljuka , together with Helena Ekholm , Anna Carin Zidek and Carl Johann Bergman. This was the second victory of a Swedish mixed relay. At its first World Championships in 2011 in Khanty-Mansiysk , the men 's relay narrowly missed a medal with a fourth place. He himself was able to achieve 11th place in both the sprint and the mass start. At the season finale in Oslo he achieved his personal best with a fifth place in the sprint and pursuit.
In the following season 2011/2012 Fredrik Lindström was able to win a sprint race in Antholz and thus celebrate his first victory in the World Cup. At the world championships of the same year he won his first medal in the mass start with a third place. The Swedish mixed relay just missed the podium with a fourth place. At the end of the season he reached the podium again in the sprint with a third place. He finished fourth in the discipline of the mass start.
In the 2012/2013 season , Lindström was unable to build on his good placements from the previous season. However, thanks to his consistent results, both in the overall World Cup and in the individual World Cup, he achieved seventh place in the overall ranking. In the pursuit classification he finished fourth without having achieved a single podium. At the World Championships in Nové Město , he again won the bronze medal. This time in the individual race, in the sprint, he finished eighth and was able to improve to seventh place in the pursuit. At the 2014 Winter Olympics , he finished in the top twenty in all individual races and finished sixth in the mass start.
Third relay victory and Olympic victory (2014 to 2019)
In the following years, Lindström was unable to build on his previous performance and only achieved a few top ten results. A fourth place in the mass start in the 2014/15 season was his season best. In the following season he could not achieve a top ten result. He started the 2016/17 season more successfully with a ninth place in the individual and a second in the sprint. But he was unable to maintain this level throughout the season. At the world championships , he achieved his third top ten place of the season with sixth place in the mass start. He finished fourth in the final pursuit of the season.
In the Olympic season 2017/18 started Linström with a seventh place in the sprint and fifth in the pursuit of success. The season started successfully for the Swedish season with fourth place in Hochfilzen. In Oberhof, the men's relay , consisting of Lindström, Martin Ponsiluoma , Sebastian Samuelsson and Jesper Nelin , celebrated their first victory since 2009. The relay at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang built on this performance and Lindström won the gold medal in the men's relay with Peppe Femling , Sebastian Samuelsson and Jesper Nelin. Before that, he had already finished eighth in the individual race and 15th in the mass start.
After the sprint race in Oslo in the 2018/19 season , in which he finished 68th, he ended his career as a competitive athlete.
