Way of life

The moths prefer mountainous areas with pine forests and sandy soils. The caterpillars feed on strawflower ( Helichrysum arenarium ) and common cat's paw ( Antennaria dioica ). First they feed in the soft pulp of the stem and hibernate here. In the spring of the following year, they spin the young shoots together and feed on the upper parts of the plant, causing the plant to grow stunted. Excrement is deposited on an outer sheet. The larvae pupate within the web, the pupae rest for about three weeks.

Flight and caterpillar times

The moths fly in June and July. The caterpillars appear from July and feed in the pulp of the flower stalks into winter. They overwinter and continue their development the following spring.
