The Pterophorinae are a subfamily of the feather moths (Pterophoridae) within the butterflies (Lepidoptera).
features
The characteristic that defines the subfamily is a two-part signum (a thorn-shaped chitinized process) in the bursa copulatrix of the females. In addition, the fore wings of the Pterophorinae are only incised once.
Way of life
The main food plants are the composites (Asteraceae). In addition to these, plants from around 20 other very different families are eaten. The caterpillars of most species live on herbaceous plants, some also on woody plants. The species of the genus Buckleria feed on sundew plants (Droseraceae) . A few species are considered pests in agriculture , such as Platyptilia carduidactyla on artichokes .
Systematics
With 852 known species worldwide, the Pterophorinae are the largest subfamily of feather moths. In Europe, 140 species are found, of which 77 are in Central Europe. The species of the former subfamily Platyptilinae Tutt, 1907, which was defined on the basis of the wing veining of the hind wings, are now also counted among the Pterophorinae, as this feature has turned out to be paraphyletic .
