Cnaemidophorus is a genus of butterflies from the family of feather moths (Pterophoridae). The genus name could easily be confused with that of the lizard genus Cnemidophorus .
features
The moths are orange-brown in color, the species Cnaemidophorus rhododactyla , which occurs in Europe , has a wingspan of 18 to 26 millimeters. The forewings are incised twice, the hind wings triple. On the hind wings, at the apex of the third wing lobe, there is a scaly tooth. The costal triangle is well developed. The wire R1 is formed on the front wings. The palps are short and slender and have a strongly developed base segment.
distribution
A representative of the genus Cnaemidophorus is distributed in the northern hemisphere ( Holarctic ) with the exception of the far north, one species occurs in the Afrotropic Islands ( Madagascar ) and one species is native to the Neotropic Islands ( Colombia ).
Way of life
The caterpillars feed on various types of roses such as the dog rose ( Rosa canina ), the beaver's rose ( Rosa spinosissima ) and other types of roses, including cultivated species.
Flight time
The species Cnaemidophorus rhododactyla , which occurs in Europe, forms one generation per year that flies from June to August. The moths are nocturnal and are attracted by light.
Systematics
The genus Cnaemidophorus is currently assigned to three species, one of which also occurs in Central Europe . The type species Cnaemidophorus rhododactyla was described by Denis & Schiffermüller in 1775 as Alucita rhododactyla .
