history
Himeville was named in 1902 after the Prime Minister of Natal , Albert Henry Hime . Hime was a road construction engineer who was elected Prime Minister in 1889. The town was originally established in 1890 as a police outpost and branch of the Border Mounted Rifles , a regiment of mounted border guards, after a series of cattle theft and arms smuggling in the area.
The Himeville Museum
The stone buildings that now house the Himeville Museum were built in 1900. It was the last fort with loopholes. The buildings served as a prison until 1972. There are many exhibition rooms with various themed displays arranged around an open air exhibition of settlers and agricultural history.
The museum commemorates the former residents of the region and their way of life. It refers to today's communities Bulwer, Underberg and Himeville. There is also an extensive archive here.
The Himeville Museum covers a wide range of exhibitions, from fossils and objects from the Stone Age to an extensive display of the San and the early settlers to African beadwork and other products.
The exhibitions also deal with the Second Boer War and the two world wars . You can visit an old post office and a classroom. There is also an exhibition on wildlife and many agricultural tools and machines, including an iron forge and workshop.
The museum is housed in the old rock-built fort built in 1896 by the Border Mounted Rifles who were supposed to oversee the area after the Le Fleur Rebellion of 1895. After completion in 1899, it was only used once during the Bambata Rebellion of 1906, although there was no fighting in the area. After the Second Boer War, the buildings were taken over by the Natals mounted police and converted into a prison with additional houses for the guards, a court and some cells. When the prison was abandoned in 1972, a museum was established in 1976; In 1978 it was declared a national monument. Today it belongs to the KZN Provincial Museum Service .
Old residence
At the corner of Arbuckle and Clayton Streets, the judge's residence was built in 1898, for which the building was used continuously until recently.
Himeville Nature Reserve
The nature reserve extends along the eastern border of the village. In 1973 the 104 hectares were declared a protected area. You can see some species of antelope. There are also birds on the small dam. Most of the park can be visited on foot.
