Mokhotlong is the capital of the Mokhotlong district in Lesotho . It is located in the mountainous east of Lesotho near the river of the same name at an altitude of 2200 meters above sea level. The name means place of the smooth neck rapids .

history

Mokhotlong was founded in 1905 as a settlement around a police station. For a long time the place was known for its seclusion. It was not until 1948 that the first scheduled flights from Maseru to Mokhotlong were made. Until then, the place was supplied by donkey caravans via the Sanipass . In 2016, the city had 12,940 inhabitants, making it the country's smallest district capital.

Today the city has a hospital, a hotel and administrative facilities.

traffic

The traffic to Maseru is by plane, bus or car. The road connection runs in a northerly arc over Butha-Buthe . The Sanipass can also be reached by road.
