The district of Mokhotlong is one of ten districts (districts) of the Kingdom of Lesotho in southern Africa .
geography
The district is located in the east of Lesotho. It is named after its capital Mokhotlong (German roughly: "Place des Glattnackenrapps "). Its size is 4075 km², its population 100,442 (as of 2016). This makes it the second least populated and most sparsely populated district in the country.

The Mokhotlong District is located in the Maloti Mountains . In the east of the district is the highest mountain in southern Africa, the 3482 meter high Thabana Ntlenyana . With the Tlaeeng Pass - 3275 meters above sea level - the district also has the highest road pass in Africa .
The district borders in the northwest on the district Butha-Buthe , in the south on the district Thaba-Tseka and in the west on the district Leribe . In the northeast, the Mokhotlong district shares a short border with the South African province of Free State . East of the Mokhotlong district is the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal , to which there is the Sani Pass border crossing .
Localities
- Mokhotlong, 2200 meters high, only accessible by plane since 1948, previously by donkey transport, today the central town with a hospital
- Letseng-la-Terae, around 3,200 meters high, the highest permanent settlement in Lesotho, near a diamond mine north of Mokhotlong
- Tlokoeng , on the Mokhotlong River - a tributary of the Senqu - is the traditional seat of the Batlokoa
