Jaroslav Soukup (born July 12, 1982 in Jičín ) is a former Czech biathlete .

Jaroslav Soukup lives and trains in Jilemnice and starts for SKP Jablonec . He has been practicing biathlon since 1999, since 2004 as a member of the Czech national team. The coach of the physical education teacher is Ondrej Rybár.

Career

Soukup made his international debut at the Junior European Championships in Zakopane in 2000 . In the individual he was sixth there, with the relay he won the bronze medal. The Junior World Championships of the year in Hochfilzen were far less successful for him . The following year he won the bronze medal with the relay again at the European Junior Championships in Haute-Maurienne . The Junior World Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk were again only moderate, the best result here was a tenth relay place. In 2002 Soukup made his debut in a relay race in Antholz in the biathlon world cup . However, it was his last appearance on the highest international stage in biathlon for a long time, and in the following seasons he continued to compete in the Junior World and European Championships as well as in the European Cup. At the Ridnaun Junior World Championships in 2002 he was able to achieve better placements for the first time and even won the silver medal with the relay. He made his European Cup debut in Obertilliach as tenth in an individual race. The highlight of the season was again the Junior World Championships in Kościelisko , where Soukup won bronze with the relay. At the subsequent European Junior Championships in Forni Avoltri he was seventh in the sprint, fifth in the pursuit and won the gold medal with the relay, which also included Michal Šlesingr and Ondřej Moravec . In the same place he also started at the Junior World Championships in summer biathlon in the summer of that year . Here he was tenth in the singles and sixth in the relay.

In 2004 Soukup made his debut in a sprint race in a World Cup individual race in Pokljuka (74th). His season highlight was his participation in the European Championships in Minsk , where his best placement was a ninth place in the individual. In the summer he competed in Osrblie at the Summer Biathlon World Championships and was ninth in the pursuit and fourth in the relay. He was particularly successful in the world championships the following year in Muonio . After finishing fourth in the sprint, he won bronze in the pursuit, silver in the mass start and gold in the relay. On the Holmenkollen in Oslo , the Czech was able to collect World Cup points for the first time as 19th in the pursuit in the following season. At the 2006 European Championships in Langdorf , he won an individual title for the first time with gold in the sprint. At the 2006 world championships in summer biathlon in Ufa , he again won a silver medal with the team. In the 2006/07 season the athlete was also able to celebrate more successes in the European Cup. In Östersund he was 18th in an individual, in Hochfilzen he was 15th in the sprint and fourth in the relay. The highlight of the season was participation in the 2007 Biathlon World Championships in Antholz, where he achieved a 32nd place in the sprint as the best place. At the European Championships in Bansko , Soukup finally won a silver medal behind Tomasz Sikora in the sprint. In the 2009/2010 season Jaroslav Soukup made it into the top ten for the first time in 4th place in the singles of Antholz. Jaroslav Soukup took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics. His best result was 30th place in the individual. With the relay he finished 7th. At the start of the 2011/12 World Cup season in Östersund, Jaroslav Soukup took 3rd place after 7th place in the sprint in the pursuit and was on the winners' podium for the first time. At the 2012 World Championships in Ruhpolding , Soukup won the bronze medal in singles.

In the 2012/13 season , the home world championship in Nové Město was due for Soukup and his teammates . In the very first competition, the mixed relay, the Czech quartet made up of Veronika Vítková , Gabriela Soukalová , Soukup and Ondřej Moravec won the bronze medal. In the further course he was able to book a 27th place in the sprint, as well as further top 50 placements in pursuit and individual. At the end of the men's relay reached a 6th place.

The 2013/14 Olympic season was initially solid with various top 40 placements. Jaroslav Soukup was able to achieve his first Olympic medal at the Olympic Games in Sochi in February 2014. In the sprint he finished third after a faultless shooting, behind Olympic champion Ole Einar Bjørndalen and second Dominik Landertinger . In the mixed relay, the Czech team landed on the podium with the same team as at the 2013 home World Cup and won the silver medal. In the overall World Cup, Soukup was 30. His best result at the end of the season. The following years were solid. Another 11th place in the sprint of the 2015 World Championships in Kontiolahti should be emphasized . After numerous years in the World Cup, Soukup was alternately used in the World Cup and IBU Cup from 2015. At the 2018 Olympic Games , he achieved 7th place in the Czech men's relay.

At the end of the 2017/18 season he ended his career as a professional athlete.
