Ullrich showed the strongest mileage. While Franz Weber, who was called up to replace Rudolf Dockner, ranked among the best in the world among the Austrians, Eder and Horn could not cope with the unfavorable wind conditions.

The shooting was affected by a violent cross wind; The reigning world champion Klaus Siebert (GDR) and the ex-world champions Odd Lirhus (NOR) and Heikki Ikola (FIN) were victims . Anatoly Aljabjew was able to catch the two GDR athletes in the last shooting. Silver medalist Ullrich protested because, in his opinion, he only made 2 and not 3 shooting errors.

15 relays at the start, 14 of them in the ranking.
Austria was in fourth place after the first handover, but four missed shots by Franz-Josef Weber brought a relapse to 9th place, which only the other runners were able to straighten out in a conciliatory way, thus achieving the initially set goal. The URS was outstanding thanks to its shooting performance (not a miss). Third place for the FRG came as a surprise, because Bernreiter had not started well, but his comrades made up for it. France crossed the finish line behind Austria, but received a time credit for mistaken misses.
