Lyle Barber Nelson (born February 9, 1949 in McCall , Idaho ) is a retired American biathlete .

Nelson participated in four Winter Olympics during his playing career . At his first Winter Games in Innsbruck in 1976 , he finished 35th in an individual race over 20 kilometers. In the relay competition over four times 7.5 kilometers, he finished eleventh with his colleagues Dennis Donahue , John Morton and Peter Dascoulias . Four years later, at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , Nelson started in the sprint and in the relay together with Martin Hagen , Donald Nielsen Jr. and Peter Hoag Jr. He reached positions 19 and 8. Nelson's third Winter Olympics he saw in 1984 in Sarajevo . In the individual race over 20 kilometers he was 26th, in the relay with Bill Carow , Donald Nielsen Jr. and Josh Thompson eleventh. Nelson carried the American flag at the opening ceremony of the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary . In the sprint race over 10 kilometers he finished 30. The relay with Curt Schreiner , Darin Binning and Josh Thompson he finished in ninth place. Furthermore, Nelson was able to win 13 US and North American championship titles during his career.

Nelson graduated from the US Military Academy in 1971 with an engineering degree . He later earned a Masters degree from the University of Southern California and a PhD from the Fielding Institute . He then worked as a program director for integrative medicine at McCall Memorial Hospital .
