Franz Bernreiter from WSV Rabenstein is one of the most successful German biathletes of the first half of the 1980s. He took part in the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid and won the bronze medal together with Hans Estner , Peter Angerer and Gerhard Winkler in the German relay team as the starting runner behind the teams from the USSR and the GDR. At the Biathlon World Championships in Lahti in 1981 , Bernreiter, together with Angerer, Andreas Schweiger and Fritz Fischer, won the silver medal behind the GDR relay and ahead of the team from the Soviet Union as the final runner in the BRD relay.
