Olena Mychajliwna Pidhruschna ( Ukrainian Оле́на Миха́йлівна Підгру́шна ; Russian Елена Михайловна Подгрушная ; born January 9, 1987 in Legnica , Poland ) is a Ukrainian biathlete and politician.

Career

Olena Pidhruschna was already a successful junior athlete. Your first major international event was the 2004 Junior World Championships in the summer biathlon in Osrblie . Twelfth place in the sprint was the best result there. The following winter she competed at the Junior World Championships in Kontiolahti , where a twelfth place in the individual was the best result. In 2005 she also appeared again at the Summer Junior World Championships, this time in Muonio , where she won gold with the relay. There was also eleventh place in the sprint, eighth in the pursuit and four in the mass start. A year later she won bronze in the singles of the Winter Junior World Championships in Presque Isle . At the European Junior Championships 2006 in Langdorf , Pidhruschna missed another medal win as fourth with the relay. The summer world championship also went well again with winning the silver medal in the pursuit after finishing fifth in the sprint. The 2007 Junior World Championships in Martell also brought good results, but not a medal . The best result was sixth place in the sprint. The Ukrainian won silver with her relay at the 2007 European Junior Championships in Bansko . As fourth in the sprint, she missed another medal and finished fifth in the pursuit and individual. She also won silver in the sprint and bronze in the pursuit at the Summer Junior World Championships in Otepää . Your last Junior World Championship in Ruhpolding was less successful than the previous ones. The last European Junior Championship went better in Nové Město na Moravě , where Pidhruschna was fourth in the relay and in the sprint and seventh in the individual and eleventh in the pursuit.

Pidhruschna made her adult debut in 2005 in the European Biathlon Cup . In her first race, a sprint in Windischgarsten , she was 18th. For the first time in the biathlon world cup , the Ukrainian competed in 2007 in Lahti , where she finished 44th in the sprint and 45th in the pursuit. She won her first World Cup points in 29th place at the start of the 2008/09 season in Östersund . She celebrated her first World Cup victory with the Ukrainian relay team in Oberhof in 2009 . Olena Pidhruschna achieved her first top ten placement with tenth place in the individual at the 2009 World Cup opener in Östersund. Her best World Cup position so far is seventh in the sprint race, also achieved in Östersund. In 2009 she won the European Championship with the Ukrainian relay, and in 2010 she was again vice European champion with the relay. Olena Pidhruschna took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics. Her best individual result was twelfth place in the mass start. With the relay she finished sixth. At the start of the 2012/2013 World Cup in Östersund, Olena Pidhruschna was able to present herself on the podium of the Biathlon World Cup for the first time. In the sprint, she took second place. She repeated this success later in the season in a pursuit behind Tora Berger in Antholz . With six top ten results in 14 races, 33rd as the worst result and eighth overall, she was the best biathlete in her country at the time. In Oberhof she won another race with the relay alongside Julija Dschyma , Valj and Vita Semerenko , in Hochfilzen they had previously only been beaten by Norway. She achieved her first individual victory at the Biathlon World Championships in 2013 when she won the gold medal in the sprint ahead of Tora Berger and then took bronze in the pursuit race and silver with the Ukrainian relay.

At the 2014 Olympic Games , she won the gold medal with the Ukrainian relay team.

In the course of the upheavals in Ukraine , Pidhruschna was appointed Deputy Minister for Culture and Sport of Ukraine in spring 2014.

Just one year later, for the 2015/16 season , she returned to the Biathlon World Cup.
