Career

Wita Semerenko, who starts for Dynamo Sumy and is coached by Hryhorij Shamraj, made her first major appearance at the 2005 European Championships in Novosibirsk . In addition to a few good individual results, she won bronze with her twin sister Walentyna Semerenko with the Ukrainian relay. In 2005 she started for the first time at the Junior World Championships in Kontiolahti , where she won the silver medal in the individual races and with the relay. In the same year, Semerenko started in Obertilliach for the first time in the European Cup and immediately finished fifth in the individual race. After further good results, she made her World Cup debut (11th) with the relay in Oberhof in 2006 . In Östersund she ran her first individual race, in which she also took World Cup points as 24th. She contested her first senior world championships in 2007 in Antholz , where she was able to show several good results. In the individual, in the pursuit and in the mass start she was 20th, in the sprint 12th. At the Biathlon World Championships in 2008 in Östersund , she surprisingly came fourth in the mass start and also won silver in the relay. In Oberhof 2009 she won her first relay World Cup race together with Olena Pidhruschna , Oxana Chwostenko and her sister Walentyna Semerenko .

Wita Semerenko took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics, where her best results were 22nd place in the individual and 6th place in the relay. She regularly delivers her best results at world championships, which is also reflected in the bronze medals in the individual races in 2011 in Khanty-Mansiysk and in the sprint in 2012 in Ruhpolding . At the 2013 World Championships in Nové Město na Moravě , she succeeded in repeating third place in Ruhpolding in the sprint and a few days later she ran with the Ukrainian relay team, as in 2008, to silver medal. At the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi , she won the bronze medal in the sprint competition and the gold medal in the relay.

In addition to winter biathlon, Semerenko also runs summer biathlon . In 2005 in Muonio she took part in the Junior World Championships for the first time and won gold with the team as well as bronze in sprint and mass start. In Otepää 2007, like in Ufa in 2006, she won bronze in the sprint and also won the silver medal in the pursuit and with the relay.

Semerenko missed the 2014/15 season due to a herniated disc . Due to the birth of her first child, she did not take part in the following season either. Only after a three-year break from competition did she contest international biathlon races again at the IBU Cup in Otepää in March 2017 . In the sprint, she placed ninth, with the Ukrainian team she achieved a podium finish in two mixed relay races with a third place each. From the beginning of the 2017/18 World Cup season , she was again an integral part of the Ukrainian team. With two third places at the World Cups in France and in Oberhof , she again achieved podium positions in individual races and two second places in relay races. Semerenko also took part in the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , but clearly missed the medal ranks. In the relay race, the team could not repeat their success from 2014, together with Irina Petrenko , Julija Dschyma and Anastassija Merkuschyna , Semerenko finished eleventh. At the beginning of 2019, she won the bronze medal behind the teams from Norway and the host country Sweden at the World Championships in Östersund with Dschyma, Merkushyna and her twin sister Walentyna .
