The 16th European Biathlon Championships 2009 were held from February 28th to March 4th in four competitions for women and men in Ufa . For the first time there was an age limit of 26 years at the open championships, to which non-Europeans were also allowed. However, only Canada and Uzbekistan took up the opportunity to participate as a non-European nation . While the EM was very important in Eastern Europe , the Western European nations, especially the strong countries such as Norway , Germany , Russia , France , Austria and Sweden sent the second team. Several countries, such as Italy , Sweden, Romania and Hungary , had completely refrained from sending athletes. With the World Cups in Europe and North America, the World Cup in South Korea, the European Championship in Siberia and the Junior World Cup in Canada, the 2008/09 season brought burdens for the associations that many could no longer bear.
