Oleh Mykolajowytsch Bereschnyj ( Ukrainian Олег Миколайович Бережний , scientific transliteration Oleh Mykolajovyč Berežnyj ; born January 18, 1984 in Sumy , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a former Ukrainian biathlete .

Oleh Bereschnyj was a professional athlete, is a manager for international relations by profession and works as an aspirant at the Sumy National Agricultural University . He trains at Sumy Army Sports Club. Between 2002 and 2005 he took part in a total of four Junior World Championships and four Junior European Championships. At his first World Championships in Ridnaun , he won silver behind Christoph Knie in the individual, and in 2003 in Kościelisko again silver behind Knie, now in the pursuit. He also won bronze with the relay. He also won a medal at his third Junior World Championships in Haute-Maurienne , bronze in the individual. Only at his last World Cup in Kontiolahti , Berezhnyj won no medals. At his first European Championship in Kontiolahti, he was able to achieve sixth place in the individual as the best result. 2003 in Forni Avoltri was a fourth place with the relay best result. In 2004 he won his first European Championship medals in Minsk with bronze in singles and silver in relay. Especially successful for Bereschnyj was the last Junior European Championship in Novosibirsk . He won the sprint title as well as silver in singles and in pursuit (behind Ondřej Moravec ) and bronze with the relay. In Bansko in 2007 he also took part in a senior European championship for the first time. Best result was a 32nd place in the pursuit.

The 2007 Summer Biathlon European Championships in Tyssowez , Ukraine, brought him the gold medal in the mixed relay and the bronze medal in the sprint. At the Summer Biathlon World Championships in 2007 in Otepää , he finished eighth in the mass start and won the silver medal in the mixed cross-country relay. With the relay, this placement was repeated , this time on roller skis , among the eligible relays at the Summer Biathlon World Championships 2012 in Ufa .

In the 2003/04 season Bereschnyj started in the Junior European Cup, where he was second in Ridnaun in the sprint and in Obertilliach individual. Since the 2005/06 season he mostly competed in the European Cup and was able to compete in the first race of this season in the Biathlon World Cup . He was 68th in the Östersund sprint . In the World Cup he was only used very sporadically for two years. At the third World Cup station of the 2007/08 season he finished fourth in a single race in Pokljuka and was able to place in the top of the world for the first time.

At the Winter Universiade in Harbin (China) in 2009, after winning the silver medal in the sprint, he won the pursuit race.

Oleh Bereschnyj is one of the most accurate athletes in the World Cup. In the 2008/2009 season he leads the statistics of the best shooters with 94% hit rate ahead of Simon Eder .
