Julian Eberhard (born November 9, 1986 in Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer ) is an Austrian biathlete . He made his debut in the Biathlon World Cup in 2006 , won his first victory there in 2016 and won several competitions in the following years. At the 2019 World Championships in Östersund , he won the bronze medal in the mass start. Eberhard is one of the fastest runners in the biathlon world cup.
Career
Beginnings and first years in the World Cup (until 2015)
The Saalfelden top police athlete Julian Eberhard, younger brother of Tobias Eberhard , has been involved in biathlon since 1996. He is a member of HSV Saalfelden and trained there as a young athlete with Alfred Eder , who later became the head coach of the biathletes in the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV). In the youth and junior sector, Eberhard took part in several international championships from 2005. He achieved his best individual result in seventh place in the 15-kilometer individual race at the 2006 Junior World Championships . The following year, he and the junior relay team around Sven Grossegger , Andreas Zelzer and Dominik Landertinger won the silver medal behind Russia at the European Championships in Bansko, Bulgaria . He came on the podium four times in races of the Junior European Cup, but won no race.
Eberhard made his debut in the biathlon world cup in 2006 in a sprint in Hochfilzen , in which he was 57th and was able to qualify for the pursuer (54th). In the following years he was used in both the World Cup and the lower-class European Cup (from 2008: IBU Cup ). In the IBU Cup he won four races between November 2012 and January 2014 - three sprints and one pursuit - in the World Cup he reached the top ten in two sprint races up to 2015: initially in February 2011 in tenth place in Fort Kent , almost two years later as eighth in Ruhpolding . With these results, he lagged behind the successes of his teammates Eder , Landertinger, Mesotitsch and Sumann , who formed the core of the ÖSV biathlon team in the early 2010s and won World Cup races and Olympic medals. In 2013, Eberhard started at the World Championships for the first time and finished 16th in the mixed relay and 66th place in the sprint. At the 2014 Winter Olympics , he was a reserve runner in the six-man squad , but was not used.
Eberhard already presented himself as a particularly strong runner during these years: In winter 2012/13, for example, he was the third fastest athlete in the World Cup behind overall World Cup winner Martin Fourcade from France and the Norwegian Lars Berger , his times were almost four percent faster than the average of the field of participants. At 70 percent, however, his hit rate in shooting was the lowest in the ÖSV team. Eberhard finished the season in 40th place overall, which was his best result in this classification in the first ten years after his World Cup debut (until 2016).
World Cup victories and World Cup medals (since 2015)
In the 2015/16 season , Eberhard won his first World Cup race - also in the sprint - after a 7th place in the Hochfilzen sprint and a 4th place in the Canmore sprint at the end of the season in Khanty-Mansiysk , Russia . Flawlessly and with the second fastest time he prevailed against the equally flawless Germans Simon Schempp and Arnd Peiffer and pushed his teammate Dominik Landertinger off the podium. It was Eberhard's first podium in an individual race and the first sprint victory of an Austrian biathlete since Christoph Sumann in Osrblie, Slovakia in December 2001.
As the only Austrian biathlete, Eberhard won further individual World Cup competitions, two sprint races (in Oberhof and at the Olympic dress rehearsal in Pyeongchang ) and a mass start in Kontiolahti in the winters 2016/17 and 2017/18 . In the overall World Cup in 2016/17, he was sixth for the first time and was the best of the ÖSV team. Reinhard Gösweiner , who has looked after Eberhard as head coach of the Austrian team since 2014, attributed the "turnaround" in his athlete to the fact that he had thought too much about shooting for a long time, but now successfully "destroyed old systems" in training. “And replaced it with new ones. Eberhard's shooting performance in the competition remained inconsistent. In the sprint in particular (with only two instead of four shooting bouts), he occasionally managed to achieve races with only one shot or completely without a shot, but in others he missed almost half of all targets. His hit rate was still slightly below average by 75 percent. Eberhard maintained his strength on the trail, set several best times in the 2016/17 season and was the second fastest biathlete in the World Cup after Martin Fourcade over the entire winter.
From 2016, Eberhard was regularly used in major events - such as the World Cup - in the Austrian relay. Together with Daniel Mesotitsch, Simon Eder and Dominik Landertinger, he won bronze at the 2017 home World Cup in Hochfilzen and thus his first international medal at a major adult event. At the 2018 Olympic biathlon competitions in Pyeongchang, Eberhard was among the top twenty in all four individual competitions. In the sprint , he was fourth - after a penalty loop and a broken stick - missing the bronze place by just 0.7 seconds, and was 8.4 seconds behind the winner Arnd Peiffer. With the relay he was fourth in Pyeongchang, running in third position, he shot the only two penalties for the Austrian team and fell back from the top group. Eberhard secured his first individual medal at the 2019 World Championships in Östersund, where he came third in the final mass start when Dominik Windisch won .
