Athletic career

Benedikt Doll
(Sprint in Oberhof, 2018)

Beginnings

Benedikt Doll, son of the runner Charly Doll , starts for the Breitnau ski guild . In Ruhpolding he took part in the biathlon junior world championships in 2008 and was 71st in the individual, fifth in the sprint, seventh in the pursuit and won the relay race title with Benjamin Thym and Felix Schuster. A year later in Canmore the singles again became Doll's worst race with 16th place. In the sprint with fifth place and the pursuit with fourth place, he just missed medals. He won the title again alongside Erik Lesser , Simon Schempp and Florian Graf with the relay. The next international assignments followed at the 2010 Junior World Championships in Torsby . With the ranks four in the individual and five in the sprint, he again just missed medals, in the pursuit race he was tenth. With the season, which also included Tom Barth , Johannes Kühn and Manuel Müller , Doll won the title for the third time. At the 2010 Military World Ski Championships in Brusson , which took place a little later , he came 32nd in the sprint and 14th in the military patrol with Robin Irion, Robin Kiel and Robin Belau. In 2011 he took part in his fourth Junior World Championship in Nové Město and won his fourth title in the relay race with Steffen Bartscher , Kühn and Barth. In the individual, he won the silver medal behind Simon Desthieux . In the sprint he was 23rd and improved in the pursuit race based on it to ninth place. At the 2011 European Biathlon Championships in Ridnaun , Doll was initially used with the juniors, where he was second in the sprint and the pursuit behind Vyacheslav Akimov . In the individual and relay races, he was used for the men and was eleventh in the individual. With Kiel, Graf and Lesser, he won the European Championship. After the EM, the first appearances in the IBU Cup followed . In the first race, an individual in Annecy , he missed winning IBU Cup points for the first time in 41st place. In the following sprint he won first points in 20th place.

First World Cup appearance (2011/12 season and 2012/13 season)

In Osrblie he ran his first full European championships in men in 2012 and was 24th in the individual, 25th in the sprint and 13th in the pursuit. Thanks to his good results in the IBU Cup , he was also able to secure the overall victory of the season . Doll also won the pursuit and sprint evaluation. At the season finale , Doll came to Khanty-Mansiysk for his first appearances in the Biathlon World Cup . As 32nd in the sprint and 28th in the pursuit, he immediately won his first World Cup points and achieved 83rd place in the overall standings of the season after four races in which he always won points.

In the following year he started again mainly in the IBU Cup and secured third place in the overall ranking. At his season highlight this year, the 2013 European Championships in Bansko , he won silver in the sprint and the title in the pursuit race behind Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen . In individual he was 13th. At the Biathlon World Cup 2012/13 in Sochi he came, after deployments in Hochfilzen in the sprint (35th place) and in the pursuit (40th place), towards the end of the season to further appearances in the World Cup. In the individual he was sixth there and achieved by far his best individual World Cup result. He also scored points with 34th place in the pursuit. Because of this performance, he was also used as the final runner of the relay, with which he reached second place. At the final in Khanty-Mansiysk he narrowly missed the points with a 41st place in the sprint and fell back to 51st in the pursuit after six misses.

Victory in the IBU Cup (2013/14 season)

He also spent most of the 2013/14 season in the IBU Cup . At the second station of the IBU Cup, Doll was able to win an IBU Cup race for the first time. In Beitostølen he was able to win both the individual and the sprint. This also succeeded in the individual because he only shot one mistake, he had only succeeded in doing this once before. In Obertilliach and Ruhpolding he was also able to achieve two more podium places and was again third in the overall standings. At this year's European Championships in Nové Město he was able to win a medal again with a second place in the individual. After finishing fifth in the sprint, he just missed third place in the pursuit, 1.6 seconds behind.

After the European Championships, as in previous years, he started again in the World Cup . In Kontiolahti he was able to achieve two top ten results with a seventh and a ninth place and was 50th in the overall ranking, which he was able to improve by 16 places compared to the previous season.

First World Championships (2014/15 season)

As in previous years, the 2014/15 season began in the IBU Cup . After the turn of the year, however, he was able to switch to the World Cup . In his first race of the year in Oberhof he was eighth in the sprint and with this result qualified for the mass start, where he was eighth again. In Ruhpolding, he was able to confirm his good performance with another top ten result and establish himself in the World Cup team. Until the world championships he could not show any top ten results, but reached the points in all races. The 2015 World Championships in Kontiolahti were his first and a 10th place in the sprint, he was again placed among the top ten athletes. At the season finale in Khanty-Mansiysk, he achieved a podium finish for the first time with third place in the sprint. Two days later, he finished second in pursuit behind Canadian Nathan Smith . Overall, Doll reached 21st place in the overall ranking and in the sprint ranking he was even 11th.

First World Cup medal (2015/16 season)

The 2015/16 season was the first season that Doll spent entirely in the World Cup. With a 46th place in the opening singles in Östersund , this did not start promisingly. In the sprint he finished fifth and in the pursuit sixth. In Ruhpolding, the sprint was 61, which on the one hand was his worst World Cup result and on the other hand meant that he could not take part in the pursuit. However, due to his overall placement, he was able to participate in the mass start and finished eleventh. At the World Cup stations in North America, despite four shooting errors , he was second in the mass start in Canmore , behind Dominik Windisch .

The highlight of the season was the World Championships in Oslo . Like the season, these did not start very successfully. In the sprint, Doll was 33rd and in the pursuit only 39th. The 13th place in the individual was his best individual result, as he was only 18th in the mass start. Together with Erik Lesser, Arnd Peiffer and Simon Schempp, the German relay team was able to secure second place behind Norway and Doll won his first silver medal. Doll finished the season in fifth place in the Khanty-Mansiysk pursuit. With eighth place in the overall standings, he was second-best German behind Schempp. With a seventh place in both the sprint and the mass start classification, he was able to achieve good results there too.

Sprint World Champion (2016/17 season)

The following season began similarly to the previous year. In the individual and in the pursuit in Östersund he finished 30th and 33rd respectively. In the sprint, he narrowly missed the podium with a half-second gap to his team-mate Peiffer after a mistake in shooting and finished fourth. In the first trimester, he then no longer managed to place in the top ten. The new year started with a 44th place in the sprint in Oberhof outside of the points, in the pursuit he was able to improve by 20 places to 24th place. In the mass start he was able to run among the top ten athletes with a sixth place. In Antholz , the German relay team, with the same line-up as at the World Cup last year, prevailed against Norway by 0.1 seconds and won the race. The world championships took place in Hochfilzen this year. There Doll managed to hit all targets in the sprint for the first time, then he was able to prevail in the remote duel against the Norwegian Johannes Thingnes Bø , who had also hit everything, 0.7 seconds ahead. He won his first world championship title and at the same time his first individual race in the World Cup. In the pursuit he missed three targets and fell back to 11th place. In the individual he was also 19th with three errors and in the mass start with two errors 9th. The relay could not defend its place from the previous year and was fourth. In the rest of the season he was able to achieve a top ten placement. In the overall standings, he deteriorated to eleventh place and was fourth German behind his fellow relay team. In the sprint discipline, however, he was able to defend his seventh place from the previous year.

First Olympic Games (2017/18 season)

The 2017/18 season was dominated by the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang . Before the winter sports season really started, he first started at the German Championships 2017 in Langdorf. There he won his first national title in the sprint and secured bronze in the subsequent pursuit. The season started for Doll with no results in the top ten. Only in Annecy and Oberhof did he reach the top ten in the pursuit. In the last competition before the Olympic Games, she finished fourth in the mass start in Antholz.

The Olympic Games started for Doll with a sixth place in the sprint . In the pursuit he was able to improve by three places and had to admit defeat to the Swede Sebastian Samuelsson on the final lap , so that he finished third. With a fifth place in the mass start , he again achieved a good placement. Despite three penalties, two through Doll, the German relay managed to secure third place, so that Doll won his second bronze medal.

After the Olympics, Doll was able to achieve another four top ten results. Compared to the previous year, he was able to improve the overall ranking by two places and was ninth and thus the second best German behind Peiffer. Thanks to his good results in the mass start, he achieved third place in this classification.

Seventh overall World Cup (2018/19 season)

Benedikt Doll
(Sprint in Oberhof, 2020)

The season 2018/19 did not start this time in Ostersund, because there took place the World Championships, but in Pokljuka . Like the years before, Doll started with poor results in individual and pursuit and a fifth place in the sprint. As with his world championship title, Doll managed to complete a faultless sprint for the second time in Hochfilzen. But Johannes Thingnes Bø and Martin Fourcade had to admit defeat, so that he was third. After a sixth place in the mass start in Nové Město, he remained in the top ten in the races in Oberhof and was third behind the two Bø brothers in the sprint in Ruhpolding. In the mass start, however, he failed to hit four targets and was only 21st. The races in Antholz were not very successful either, with two results outside of the points. This was followed by a 51st place in the singles in Canmore. In Midway he was able to achieve a thirteenth place despite three mistakes and improved by four places to ninth place in the sprint with five mistakes.

At the 2019 World Championships , Doll won the silver medal in the mixed relay together with Denise Herrmann , Vanessa Hinz and Arnd Peiffer. In the men's relay he also won the silver medal with Arnd Peiffer, Roman Rees and Erik Lesser. He was 11th in the sprint, 12th in the pursuit, 10th in the individual and 8th in the mass start. At the end of the season in Oslo he achieved good results with a 6th place in the sprint, a 7th place in the pursuit and a third place in the Mass start. In the overall standings, Doll was seventh and again second-best German behind Peiffer. He was able to achieve fourth place in the sprint classification and fifth in the mass start classification. This made him the best German in the sprint ranking.

Second World Cup victory (2019/20 season)

The 2019/20 season began for Doll with a 24th place in the sprint and a 16th place in the singles in Östersund without any front placements. In Hochfilzen he came closer to the top ten athletes with an 11th and 14th place. In Annecy he shot a faultless sprint for the third time in his career and won his second World Cup race. With three mistakes in the pursuit, however, he could not defend this result and fell back to fifth place. The new year started for Doll with a disappointing 44th place in the sprint in Oberhof. In the windy mass start he then made seven mistakes and was 22nd. In the sprint in Ruhpolding he was able to deliver a faultless race again, but had to admit defeat to the two Frenchmen Martin Fourcade and Quentin Fillon Maillet . In the pursuit, he then fell back to fifth place. In Pokljuka he was able to assert himself in the mass start on the final lap against both Martin Fourcade and Johannes Thingnes Bø and finished second behind Fillon Maillet.
