Oibares , son of Megabazos , was a satrap of Daskyleion and, according to the Greek historian Herodotus, helped Dareios I to the Persian throne.

After the death of the incumbent Cambyses II and an occupation of the Persian throne by the neighboring Medes , the leaders of seven noble Persian families did not accept the foreign king Smerdis on their own throne. After killing the king , they discussed his succession . Darius I was finally able to prevail with the plea for the continuation of the monarchy . The new king was to be determined by chance - whose horse neighed first during the ride the next day, that was to become king. Dareios I then turned to his stable master Oibares, who helped him with a ruse. During the night he brought Darius I stallion up to a mare several times before he could mount it. When Dareios I and his stallion reached this point the next day, the stallion neighed in memory of this experience. A lightning bolt confirmed the sign and Darius I was declared the new king by the seven noble Persians. According to another Persian report, on the other hand, Oibares is said to have touched the mare's genitals and used their smell to make Darius I stallion neigh while riding. As Oibares then in 493 BC After becoming the satrap of Daskyleion , the Greek city of Kyzikos submitted to the Persian army, which is why the Phoenicians, allied with the Persians, did not destroy the city during their raids along the coast of Asia Minor.
