Alexander Wiktorowitsch Loginow ( Russian Александр Викторович Логинов ; born January 31, 1992 in Saratov ) is a Russian biathlete . His greatest success is the 2020 world championship title in the sprint.

Career

Junior title and World Cup debut (until 2014)

Loginow was accepted into the Russian national team in 2009 and celebrated international success in the youth field in the following years. In 2010 and 2011 he was two-time youth world champion with the relay; At the Junior World Championships in 2013 in Obertilliach , he won the sprint and 15-kilometer individual races. In the sprint he prevailed 4.9 seconds ahead of Johannes Thingnes Bø, who was a year younger . Loginow won five individual gold medals at the junior races of the European Championships in 2012 and 2013.

At the end of the 2011/12 season , Loginow was nominated for the first time for the IBU Cup on March 8, 2012 in Altenberg . With a fourth place in the individual and two second places in the sprint and in the pursuit, he won numerous points there in his first races. On February 28, 2013 he made his debut in the Sprint in Oslo in the World Cup and immediately finished fifth. In the pursuit race two days later he secured his first podium finish with third place. At the penultimate World Cup of the season, he fought for his first day win with the Russian relay in front of a home crowd in Sochi . In the winter of 2013/14 Loginow was used consistently in the World Cup, where he placed two more times among the top three athletes in an individual competition. He was also part of the Russian Olympic team for the Winter Games in Sochi, where he received an individual assignment.

Doping ban and return to the World Cup (2014 to 2018)

On November 27, 2014, the Russian Biathlon Federation announced the suspension of Loginov for doping . In a sample taken in November 2013, a later test using newer test methods found the prohibited substance EPO . He decided not to open the B sample. He was banned from the IBU for two years. His results from the 2013/14 season were subsequently withdrawn from him.

After his suspension expired in 2016, Loginow immediately returned to the national team. He competed in his first major competitions at the 2017 European Biathlon Championships in Duszniki-Zdrój . There he won the titles in singles, the pursuit and with the mixed relay; in the sprint race he only had to admit defeat to Vladimir Iliev . Shortly afterwards he returned to the highest level of competition in the sport at the World Championships in Hochfilzen and won the bronze medal with the Russian mixed relay, with the team having a conflict with the French Martin Fourcade after the competition .

In the following season Loginow was regularly used in the World Cup again, but he was not allowed to start at the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang and therefore took part in the European Championships in Ridanna again in February , where he was able to defend his title in the pursuit and two other silver medals won. Then he started again in the IBU Cup and won several victories there.

World Cup victories and world championship titles (since 2018)

In 2018/19 Loginow was one of the strongest athletes in the World Cup and at the end of the season took second place in the overall standings - well behind Johannes Thingnes Bø, who won 16 of 25 World Cup races. During the winter, Loginow won an individual competition in the World Cup for the first time in his career. On January 11, 2019, he won the Oberhof sprint with an error-free shooting performance and 25.2 seconds ahead of Bø. Two days later he was the first to cross the finish line as the final runner of the Russian relay. At the 2019 World Championships in Östersund, Loginow secured the silver medal in the sprint behind Bø and also the bronze medal in the men's relay. In the final mass start he was fourth and missed another medal by a few seconds.

Loginow became world champion in the sprint on February 15, 2020 : At the World Championships in Antholz, he beat Quentin Fillon Maillet by 6.5 seconds. In the pursuit of the day after he was in the lead until the last shooting, then fell behind Émilien Jacquelin and Johannes Thingnes Bø due to a shooting error and won the bronze medal. Loginow did not take part in the men's mass start race after the Italian police had previously questioned him in connection with doping allegations and had visited him at the hotel the night before. His trainer stated that Loginow was psychologically unable to compete under these circumstances. At the end of winter, he finished seventh in the overall World Cup, making him the best-placed Russian like in the previous winter.
