Wladimir Iliew ( Bulgarian Владимир Илиев ; English Vladimir Iliev ; born March 17, 1987 in Trojan ) is a Bulgarian biathlete .

Career

Vladimir Iliev lives in Trojan and trains in Lovech . The sports teacher who competes for Ajaks Trojan is trained by Tsvetan Zotschew. Iliew has been practicing biathlon since 1997, and has been part of the Bulgarian national team since 2004. Since 2004 he has also competed in the Junior European Cups, but initially rarely placed in the top 30. In 2005 he took part in a Junior World Championship for the first time. In Kontiolahti he was able to place 25th in the sprint, 21st in the pursuit and tenth with the Bulgarian relay. In the following season Iliew achieved several placements among the top 20 in the European Junior Cup. The Junior World Championship 2006 in Presque Isle brought in sprint and pursuit again places around 20th. With the relay he could be seventh. In 2007 in Martell and in 2008 in Ruhpolding , the Bulgarian was able to roughly maintain this level. The 2007 European Junior Championships in Bansko were quite positive . Iliew finished eleventh in the individual, 19th in the sprint, eighth in the pursuit and fifth in the relay. A year later he was able to finish tenth in the individual again in Nové Město na Moravě . The Bulgarian was particularly successful at the Junior Summer Biathlon World Championships in 2007 in Otepää . In the sprint of the roller ski competitions, he won the bronze medal behind Krassimir Anew and Dimitri Blinow and was fifth in the pursuit. In the European Cup he was able to improve over time, in 2007 he even won a sprint race in Bansko.

Iliew made his debut in the A-Class as 105th in the first individual of the Biathlon World Cup - 2006/07 season in Östersund . The first major event among seniors was the 2007 Biathlon World Championships in Antholz , where Iliew was 86th in the sprint and 63rd in the individual. With the relay he was 18. A year later Iliew ran in Östersund on the 96th place in the individual and 20 with the relay. He was able to win both in the sprint and the pursuit of the junior and senior competitions at the Open Balkan Championships in Biathlon 2008 in Băile Harghita . Since the 2008/09 season he has competed regularly in the World Cup. At the Biathlon World Championships in 2009 Iliev was able to reach the points in a World Cup race for the first time: In the individual in Pyeongchang , he was 32nd. Iliev took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics and achieved the best result in 16th place with the Bulgarian men's relay. In the Biathlon World Cup 2012/13 he achieved his first top ten place in the sprint race in Pokljuka with sixth place and at the same time his best World Cup result so far.

At the 2015 World Cup , he had his greatest successes to date with two results in the top ten. Despite a shooting error, he was only 15 seconds short of third place in the sprint.

Iliev performed successfully at the 2017 European Championships in Duszniki-Zdrój when he won the sprint title ahead of Alexander Loginow and Krassimir Anew .

Iliew achieved his greatest success at the 2019 World Championships in Östersund . He won the silver medal in the individual competition behind Arnd Peiffer and in front of Tarjei Bø .
