The sprint was the individual discipline with the shortest running route in the men's category. The 10 km were divided into three equally long running laps; After the first and the second round, the athletes had to hit five targets each at the shooting range. The first time the shooting was in a lying position, the second time in a standing position. For each target not hit, the athlete had to complete a 150-meter penalty loop. The athletes started the race at an interval of 30 seconds (sometimes 15 seconds). The winner was whoever had the fastest overall time at the finish. The top 60 athletes of the sprint qualified to take part in the pursuit race .
