Cornel Dumitru Puchianu (born October 27, 1989 in Brașov ) is a Romanian biathlete and former cross-country skier .

Career

Cornel Puchianu starts for CSS Predeal / CSAM Bucegi . At first he was active as a cross-country skier. He made his international debut at the European Youth Olympic Festival 2007 in Jaca , where he was 49th over 10km freestyle and 55th over 7.5km classic. From 2007 onwards there were further assignments, first in FIS races , later also in the Balkan Cup , Alpencup and Slavic Cup . He achieved top ten results several times. At the races of the Nordic Junior World Championships 2009 in Le Praz-de-Lys-Sommand , Puchianu was 49th in the 10-kilometer freestyle, 51st in the pursuit race and 62nd in the classic sprint qualification. He contested his last races in cross-country skiing in 2010. He then switched to biathlon. At the 2010 Military World Ski Championships in Brusson and Cogne , he started cross-country skiing and biathlon and was 39th in the 15-kilometer freestyle and ninth with Vasile Sneaga , Ștefan Gavrilă and Cristian Marian Mosoiu in the military patrol race.

He has been used regularly in biathlon since the beginning of the 2012/13 season . In Idre he reached positions 77 and 88 in his first races, two sprints. In Beitostølen he achieved his best result in the series with 66th place in a sprint. A little later he also competed in his first race in the Biathlon World Cup in Hochfilzen and was 25th with the Romanian relay alongside Remus Faur , Ștefan Gavrilă and Roland Gerbacea . His first individual race in the World Cup contested Puchianu as part of the Biathlon World Championships 2013 in Nové Město na Moravě , where he was 76th of the individual and 75th of the sprint. In the mixed relay race he was with Réka Ferencz , Luminița Pişcoran and Ștefan Gavrilă also 21st, in the men's relay race with Faur, Gavrilă and Gerbacea 19. Both times he was the final runner and the relays were lapped.

At his career highlight so far, the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi , Puchianu was able to achieve his best placement in the world class: 30th place in the sprint. At the start of the 2014/15 season , the Romanian won World Cup points for the first time in an individual in Östersund as 28th.

In 2018 Puchianu took part in his second Olympic Games . In Pyeongchang he finished 60th in sprint, 58th in pursuit and 55th in individual.
