Taninges is located at 644  m , north of Cluses , about 35 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The area of the 42.66 km² municipal area comprises a section of the Savoy Alps. From the course of the river, the community area extends northward over the floodplain and the almost 2 km wide alluvial plain. The northern part of the municipality encompasses large parts of the catchment area of the village stream Foron in a strongly reliefed area of the Chablais Alps. The deeply cut Kerbtal is flanked in the east by the heights of the Roc des Mais ( 1444  m ), in the west by the plateau of Le Praz-de-Lys. In the northwest, the limestone peaks form the Pointe de Marcelly (at 2000  m the highest point in Taninges), the Pointe du Haut Fleuri ( 1980  m ) with the mountain lake Lac du Roy, as well as the Col de la Ramaz and the Pointe d'Uble ( 1963  m ) the limit.

history

Taninges is first mentioned in a document in 1263 under the name Taningis . The village developed next to the Carthusian monastery Mélan founded by Béatrix de Faucigny in 1285 . In the Middle Ages Taninges belonged to the Faucigny dominion. As part of the Dauphiné, the place came to France in 1349, but was given to the Counts of Savoy in an exchange of countries in the Treaty of Paris in 1355 . After that, Taninges shared the fate of Savoy . The place, which was fortified at an early stage, was granted freedom rights in the 15th century.

Attractions

Town center with the village stream Foron

Taninges has a lovely old town center with town houses in the typical Savoyard style from the 17th to 19th centuries. The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church was built from 1826 to 1834 in the neoclassical style. The bridge over the village stream Foron and the Sainte-Anne chapel date from the late 16th century. The former Carthusian monastery of Mélan is located on the plain southeast of the town center. It fell victim to a fire in 1967, with the majority of the church and the cloister being spared. The structure of the monastery church dates from the 13th and 14th centuries, while the cloister was built around 1530 in the late Gothic style.

There are several chapels in the hamlets outside Taninges, of which the one in Flérier (13th century Gothic) and the 17th century Saint-Jacques chapel in Le Praz-de-Lys are particularly noteworthy.

With 3443 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Taninges is one of the medium-sized communities in the Haute-Savoie department. Since the late 1960s, thanks to the beautiful residential area, there has been a significant increase in population. Numerous single-family houses were built on the panoramic south-facing slope above the village.

Economy and Infrastructure

Taninges was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry well into the 20th century . Today there are various small and medium-sized businesses. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. In the last few decades, Le Praz-de-Lys on the high plateau has developed into an important tourist destination together with the neighboring Sommant (municipality of Mieussy), which has resulted in a significant economic boom in the municipality. Le Praz-de-Lys specializes in both summer tourism and winter tourism (various mountain railways and ski lifts).

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located at the intersection of the main road D907 (from Annemasse to Samoëns ) with the D902, which leads from Cluses via Morzine to Thonon-les-Bains . The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around twelve km away.
