Saint-Sixt is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Saint-Sixt is located at 621 m , southeast of La Roche-sur-Foron , about 22 kilometers southeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The village extends from a panoramic location on a terrace on the lower northern slope of the Sur Cou (mountain peak of the Bornes Alps ), above the broad valley of the Arve , in the Pays Rochois.
The area of the 5.21 km² large municipality covers a section of the northern Bornes Alps. The main settlement area is the 1 km wide terrace of Saint-Sixt (located around 200 m above the Arve valley). From here the community area stretches southwards over a slope ( Bois des Lanches ) that climbs relatively gently at first, later increasingly steeper, and over the promontory of Montisel to the west ridge of the Sur Cou , on which at around 1600 m the highest point of Saint-Sixt is achieved.
In addition to the actual village, Saint-Sixt also includes the hamlet of Montisel ( 1080 m ) on a ledge on the northwest slope of the Sur Cou and various farms. Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Sixt are Amancy in the north, Saint-Laurent in the east and La Roche-sur-Foron in the west.
history
The place is named after Pope Sixtus II. In the Middle Ages , Saint-Sixt was the center of its own small rule.
Attractions
The village church originally dates from the 13th century (parts of the choir have been preserved), but was later rebuilt and restored several times. The castle, which was built in 1349, is close to the church.

With 1,021 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Sixt is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. Since the mid-1980s, thanks to the beautiful residential area and the proximity to La Roche-sur-Foron, there has been a marked increase in population.
Economy and Infrastructure
Saint-Sixt is still a predominantly agricultural village today . There are also some local small businesses and some tourist facilities. Many of the employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Geneva-Annemasse area.
The village is off the main thoroughfares, but can be easily reached from La Roche-sur-Foron. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around five km away.
