history

Excavations in the area of the church have brought to light the remains of an early Christian settlement that was probably inhabited in the 5th and 6th centuries. The Latin name of the village was Salancia Sabaudiorum . In the 13th century, when Sallanches was granted certain freedoms, the place developed into the economic and religious center of the upper Arve valley. In the Middle Ages Sallanches belonged to the Faucigny dominion . As part of the Dauphiné, the place came to France in 1349, but was given to the Counts of Savoy in an exchange of countries in the Treaty of Paris in 1355 . After that, Sallanches shared the fate of Savoy . At the beginning of the 17th century, a Capuchin and an Ursuline monastery were founded in the village, which lasted until the French Revolution .

During the 19th century, Sallanches developed into an industrial community. A major fire destroyed almost all houses in 1840. In the following period, Sallanches was completely rebuilt in the checkerboard pattern. In 1977, the town of Saint-Martin-sur-Arve, east of the Arve, was incorporated into Sallanches.
