Marcellaz (to avoid confusion with Marcellaz-Albanais often avoid even Marcellaz-en-Faucigny is called) is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Marcellaz is located at 650 m , about 17 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The village extends in Faucigny , in a panoramic position on a slope gently sloping to the northwest, on the eastern edge of the Arve valley .
The area of the 4.17 km² municipal area includes a section of the Faucigny. The main part of the area is taken up by the wide ridge of Marcellaz, on which the highest point in the municipality is reached at 706 m . To the east, the municipality extends into the Bois de Chaubon forest and as far as the Foron , a left side stream of the Menoge .
Various hamlet settlements belong to Marcellaz, including Le Quart d'Avoz ( 635 m ) to the east of the village. Neighboring municipalities of Marcellaz are Fillinges in the north, Viuz-en-Sallaz and Peillonnex in the east and Contamine-sur-Arve in the west.
history
The municipality of Marcellaz was already settled in prehistoric times. In the Middle Ages , Marcellaz was part of the Faucigny domain. As part of the Dauphiné, the place came to France in 1349, but was given to the Counts of Savoy in an exchange of countries in the Treaty of Paris in 1355 . After that, Marcellaz shared the fate of Savoy .

The village church in Romanesque style originally dates back to the 12th century.

With 1,018 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Marcellaz is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. Since the beginning of the 1960s, thanks to the beautiful residential area, a continuous strong population growth has been recorded. Numerous single-family houses were built outside the old village center.
Economy and Infrastructure
Marcellaz was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . Today there are various local small businesses. Numerous workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Geneva-Annemasse area.
The village is away from the major thoroughfares, but is still well developed. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around 5 km away. Road connections exist with Fillinges, Peillonnex and Bonneville .
