Saint-Girod is a commune Déléguée with 608 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the town of Entrelacs in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belonged to the Arrondissement of Chambéry and the canton of Aix-les-Bains-1 . The local residents of Saint-Girod are called Saint-Girodais (es) in French .

With effect from January 1, 2016, the former municipalities of Albens , Cessens , Épersy , Mognard , Saint-Germain-la-Chambotte and Saint-Girod were merged into a commune nouvelle with the name Entrelacs.

geography

Saint-Girod is located at 355  m , about 25 km north of the prefecture of Chambéry and 18 km southwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south-western Albanais , in the foothills of the Alps west of the Bauges massif , on the eastern edge of the broad depression that connects the Rumilly basin with the Lac du Bourget .

In addition to the actual town center, Saint-Girod also included various hamlet settlements and farmsteads, including (from north to south):

  • Marcellaz ( 410  m ) on the slope above the Albanais depression
  • La Vieille Église ( 360  m ) on the eastern edge of the valley
  • Les Bois ( 500  m ) on a ledge east of the valley
  • Chez Darmand ( 354  m ) on the eastern edge of the valley
  • Chambera ( 375  m ) on the eastern edge of the valley basin
  • Saint-Lazare ( 45  m ) on a ledge east of the valley

Neighboring towns to Saint-Girod are Saint-Félix in the north, Chainaz-les-Frasses and Saint-Ours in the east, Mognard in the south and Albens in the west.

history

Saint-Girod is first mentioned in the 13th century. The place is named after Saint Geraldus of Aurillac . In the Middle Ages, Saint-Girod belonged to the Montfalcon dominion .

Attractions

The village church was rebuilt in the 19th century on the site of a previous building. There are chapels in Saint-Lazare (on the site of an early Christian building) and in Marcellaz. There are three castles from the 17th and 18th centuries in Marcellaz, Colombier and La Villette in the municipality.

Since the beginning of the 1980s, thanks to the attractive residential area, a continuous increase in population has been recorded.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Girod was a predominantly agricultural village. In addition, various small and medium-sized businesses have recently developed. In the meantime the village has also developed into a place of residence. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Chambéry and Annecy area .

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on a connecting road that leads from Grésy-sur-Aix to Saint-Félix. Further road connections exist with Albens, Mognard and Cusy . The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 7 km away.
