history
In the Middle Ages, Saint-Germain-la-Chambotte belonged to the lords of Montfalcon . The parish, first mentioned in the 14th century and dedicated to St. Germanus of Auxerre , was dependent on the Saint-Innocent priory. In 1936 the former parish of Saint-Germain was renamed Saint-Germain-la-Chambotte.
On the bank section along the Lac du Bourget, the Culoz – Modane railway was put into operation in 1856 . In the area of the municipality it runs partly through the 397 m long tunnel du Grand Rocher , which originally had a tunnel portal built in medieval style, similar to the tunnel de Brison further south . Recurring rock breaks from a rock outcrop above the south portal led to the decision in 1972 to blast it and remove around 20,000 m 3 of brittle rock. However, after this could not solve the basic problem of frequent falling rocks, a 75 m long protective gallery was built over the railway line and parallel national road, which directs possible rock avalanches into the lake.
Attractions
The parish church of Saint-Germain-la-Chambotte was built in the 19th century. The Belvedere of La Chambotte was built in 1882 and visited by Queen Victoria in 1887 . La Chambotte offers a beautiful view of the Lac du Bourget.

Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Germain-la-Chambotte was predominantly an agricultural village. Saint-Germain-la-Chambotte is located in the Savoie wine-growing region . White wines made from the Altesse grape variety (locally called Roussette ) may be marketed under the protected designation of origin Roussette de Savoie . The AOC Vin de Savoie applies to white wines of other grape varieties and red wines .
In addition, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a place of residence. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Chambéry and Annecy area .
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from La Biolle via La Chambotte to Chindrieux. Another road connection is with Rumilly . The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 10 km away.
