history

The municipality of Fillinges was already populated during the Neolithic and Roman times. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1012 under the name Filennio . Later, the names Fillingiaco , Fillingio (1039), Filinco (1119) and Filingium (1196) appeared. The place name goes back to the Burgundian personal name Filo (short form of Filibertus ) and means something like the people of Filo.

In the Middle Ages , Fillinges was part of the Faucigny domain. As part of the Dauphiné, the place came to France in 1349, but was given to the Counts of Savoy in an exchange of countries in the Treaty of Paris in 1355 . After that, Fillinges shared the fate of Savoy .

Outside of the old village center and on the southern slope of Les Voirons, numerous single-family house quarters have emerged.

Economy and Infrastructure

Fillinges was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . Today there are various local small and medium-sized businesses as well as construction and trading companies. A larger industrial area was built near the motorway junction. Numerous workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Geneva-Annemasse area.

The village is away from the major thoroughfares, but is still well developed. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around 4 km away. At Le Pont de Fillinges, the roads from Annemasse to Taninges and from the Arvetal over the Col de Cou to Thonon-les-Bains cross .
