Chevrier is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Chevrier is located at 480 m , about 21 kilometers west-southwest of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The village extends on a slope slightly to the northeast at the foot of the Montagne de Vuache , on the southwestern edge of the Geneva basin, south of the Rhone in the Genevois , near the border with Switzerland .
The area of the 5.35 square kilometers large municipal area includes a section of the Genevois. The northern border runs along the Rhône, which is dammed up in front of the upper entrance in the Défilé de l'Écluse to form a long, flat lake and then breaks through the Jura chain in a deep gorge . From the Rhone, the municipality extends south to the Chevrier plateau and the densely wooded, narrow ridge of the Montagne de Vuache, on which the highest elevation of Chevrier is reached at 947 m .
Neighboring communities of Chevrier are Vulbens in the east, Clarafond-Arcine in the west and Léaz and Collonges in the north.
history
The place name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Caprius . Fortifications were built on the Défilé de l'Écluse in the 13th century, which were later massively expanded under Vauban and Napoleon. Until 1780 the parish was officially called Chevrier-en-Vuache .
Attractions
The village church of Chevrier dates from the 15th century and has a beautiful Gothic portal. The Sainte-Victoire-en-Vuache chapel is on the Montagne de Vuache.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on a connecting road from Vulbens to Génissiat and is easily accessible from the main road N206, which leads from Annemasse via Saint-Julien-en-Genevois to Bellegarde-sur-Valserine . Chevrier owned a station on the Annemasse – Bellegarde railway line .
