Flat crush resistance
The flat crush resistance is the greatest resistance in ( N ) that a strip of paper or corrugated cardboard, shaped into waves and adhering to an adhesive tape, opposes a force acting perpendicular to the waves until the waves collapse.
While for the papermaker the C oncora- M edium- T est (CMT-value) is the most common test method for base papers, the corrugated board manufacturer checks course the analog properties of the total corrugated cardboard using the F LAT C inrush T est (FCT Value) method.
The abbreviations for the individual test methods are derived from the first letters of the English-language names.
CMT value
The test strips are cut lengthways in accordance with DIN 53143 to a length and width of 160 × 12.7 mm ± 0.1 mm. The sample strips are basically only cut in the running direction, because when unwinding a roll of corrugated paper, corrugation is technically only possible in this direction. A wave former is used to wave the paper strips. With the help of a toothed rack and a toothed comb, the corrugated test strip is applied to self-adhesive tape; this retains its standardized shape. The shaft, which is fixed with the adhesive tape, is placed between the plates of an upsetting press. The loading plate is moved against the sample while the deformation process of the waves is observed.
FCT value
Analogous to the CMT value, a test piece (100 cm²) of corrugated cardboard is tested in accordance with DIN EN 23035 in an upsetting press. The loading plate is moved against the sample while the deformation process of the waves is observed.
