Menthonnex-sous-Clermont is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

Menthonnex-sous-Clermont

Menthonnex-sous-Clermont lies at 545  m , about 16 kilometers west-northwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The village extends in a panoramic position on a slope inclined to the south above the valley of the Morge, between the heights of Montagne des Princes in the west and Crêt de Charmont in the east, in the Genevois .

The area of ​​the 10.14 km² large municipality covers a section of the western Genevois. The area is dominated by the undulating relief of the hills between the valleys of Fier in the south and les Usses in the north. It is drained south to the Fier by the Morge valley system. To the northeast, the municipal area extends to the wooded hill of the Crêt de Charmont , on which, at 741  m, the highest point of Menthonnex-sous-Clermont is reached.

In addition to the actual town center, Menthonnex-sous-Clermont also includes various hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Mionnaz ( 500  m ) on the slope west of the Morge valley

Menthonnex-sous-Clermont is first mentioned in a document in the early 15th century.

The village church of Menthonnex-sous-Clermont was built in the classicism style. In Mionnaz there is a former castle that is now used as a farm. There are also ruins of a former castle near Foraz.

With 715 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Menthonnex-sous-Clermont is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861 there were still 931 inhabitants in Menthonnex-sous-Clermont). Since the beginning of the 1980s, however, thanks to the beautiful residential area, the population has increased again.

Economy and Infrastructure

Menthonnex-sous-Clermont is still a predominantly agricultural village today . There are also some local small businesses. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Annecy area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Mionnaz on the D910 to Chilly. Further road connections exist with Clermont and Sillingy . The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 20 km away.
